"A leap of faith isn't so scary when you've got your best friend next to you"
We never really intended Hawthorne Boutique to even exist. Looking back at what we were and how far we come, we realize that's a completely odd statement. Let's back up here a little. In the Spring of 2011, Leslie moved in directly next door to Stacy, on Hawthorne Court (that's where our name comes from). We hit it off, and since our kids were about the same age, we ended up hanging out together a lot during the day. Hawthorne Collection started out in Stacy's living room, with 4 crazy kids running around, a newborn in tow, and a "why not?" idea. (Let's face it - we're both a little crazy, too!) With $300 of our own money and a notion that we could have jewelry made for us and sell it online, Hawthorne Collection was started. We weren't even completely sure at that time that when we sent our money to the supplier we'd get any product. A few weeks later we had a pile of bracelets and ran our first online deal. Repeating the process many times over, we ended up shipping out over 8000 packages in our first year of business. One day, after a very crazy deal, our children running around in the living room with an enormous pile of packages strewn across the living room (so many we entirely filled an empty mail truck), and 40 cartons delivered by UPS into the garage space, our husbands decided perhaps we'd better find our own spot to do host our craziness. We found a spot, but then weren't sure we could afford it, so that plan was put on hold. In the Spring of 2014, we attended the West Michigan Women's Expo with a small booth and an idea to sell off some of our stock left over from our online sales. We experienced such an overwhelming positive support from the ladies at that show that we re-visited the idea to get our own space. Heading back out to the spot we found, the price had been lowered and we signed the lease that week. (The Lord really does work in interesting ways!)
After opening our first Retail space in the Spring of 2014, we grew from what was going to be a spot to host our online-only shipping items to a true retail store open 6 days a week. In the Spring of 2015 we leased and opened our 2nd location in the heart of downtown Zeeland. Later that year, we decided we had outgrown our first little spot and moved the Hudsonville store to the 28th Ave location where we currently operate. In 2016, we decided to move our Zeeland location to its current home in Byron Center. With an ever-growing business that had now expanded to 2 retail operations, an online store, our own custom-designed and produced brand, and 22 employees, we decided in 2017 to lease a warehouse space to host our online side of the business. As our business has grown, we continue to be friends first and business partners second. We truly love our work and hope that reflects on each and every customer experience. We thank everyone for supporting our small, women-owned, built-from-the-ground-up, company. <3
